Ed Silverman is certified as a specialist in appellate law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization
and was recently included among the San Diego appellate attorneys honored by
Super Lawyers® magazine
and was also named as a Top Attorney semi-finalist in family law (appeals) by the San
Diego Daily Transcript. He is admitted to practice before all state and federal appellate courts in the State of California, as well as the United States Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the UCLA School of Law in 1977, having received his undergraduate degree with high honors from the University of Michigan, where his academic achievements included membership in the honorary Phi Beta Kappa fraternity. After law school, Ed clerked for a federal district judge in San Diego for two years and then worked at the San Diego branch office of a large international law firm for five years where he represented clients in complex commercial litigation. For the next 16 years from 1987 through 2002, Ed was a trial and appellate attorney with Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP. He first litigated commercial disputes in the trial courts, ultimately focusing on civil appeals and writs. In 2003 Ed joined five of his former Procopio partners at Sandler, Lasry, Laube, Byer & Valdez LLP, where he continues to limit his practice to appellate work in the state and federal courts, both representing parties and advising trial counsel on potential and existing appellate issues. His practice regularly involves commercial law, family law, bankruptcy law, probate law, and civil procedure. In recent years, in addition to his appellate practice, Ed has been an adjunct professor at the California Western School of Law, a lawyer representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, and a member of the district court’s U.S. Magistrate Judge Selection Committee. He is currently
chair of the San Diego County Bar Association's Appellate Court Committee, a director of the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Inc., and a founding member of the Gerald Brown Appellate Inn of Court. In acknowledgement of the pro bono legal services he has provided to the indigent, Ed received the California State Bar’s Wiley Manuel Award on 11 occasions and the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program Distinguished Service Award in 1998. Ed has been rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell since 1985.
